The kit from the Jeep was taken over for the first Champs, but later a less intrusive (no extra bodywork holes or welding needed) method was sought and came in two versions

The first Line-Laying Champs simply used transferred kit from the Jeep. Later versions used the Apparatus Cable Laying No. 8 Bolted to the inside of the champ, or the No. 11 clamped onto the back . The “Trailer 10cwt.” carried spare reels as well as tools and crook-sticks. Into this a Signalman was expected to stand and guide the cable while the Champ drove, every bump threw out a crew member, even when they sat on the side frames, and the poor linesman had to surf to cope with not only the left and right movement, but the exaggerated up and down movements of the rear floor, in opposition to the movement of the back of the champ.

Here the S2A Liney’s wagon is shown with just one ladder and two crook poles, and so in the back on the upper frame the shape of a padded square life-belt can be seen. Into this the Linesman stood and with a pole in the rowlock was able to guide the cable along the side of the road or over bushes, etc.

Same Vehicle but RHD and with Gloss Green paint scheme as used in the UK
